Molybdenum market update on October 17, 2025
This week, the domestic molybdenum market overall exhibited an oscillatory upward trend. At the beginning of the week, influenced by higher steel bidding prices, strong international molybdenum market conditions, and thick reluctance to sell with bullish expectations among molybdenum mining enterprises, intermediate smelting enterprises steadily raised ferromolybdenum quotes, thereby driving up prices of other molybdenum products. Toward the end of the week, however, as molybdenum product prices became relatively attractive and industry confidence in future trends showed slight insufficiency, suppliers' profit-taking awareness generally strengthened. Additionally, heightened fear of high prices among downstream users further suppressed the upward momentum of product prices.
According to CTIA GROUP LTD Manufacturing statistics, this week the price of molybdenum concentrate increased by approximately RMB 70 per ton-unit, a rise of 1.59%; the price of ferromolybdenum increased by approximately RMB 7,000 per ton, a rise of 2.52%; the price of molybdenum oxide increased by approximately RMB 50 per ton-unit, a rise of 1.11%; the price of sodium molybdate increased by approximately RMB 1,000 per ton, a rise of 0.51%; the price of ammonium heptamolybdate increased by approximately RMB 5,000 per ton, a rise of 1.85%; and the price of molybdenum powder increased by approximately RMB 5 per kilogram, a rise of 1.00%. This indicates that the price increases for molybdenum raw materials and molybdenum chemical products this week were roughly equal.
In terms of news, according to the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), in early October 2025, the steel inventory of key statistical steel enterprises reached 15.88 million tons, increased by 1.21 million tons from the previous period, a rise of 8.2%; increased by 3.51 million tons compared to the beginning of the year, a rise of 28.4%; increased by 60,000 tons compared to the same period last month, a rise of 0.6%; increased by 1.15 million tons compared to the same period last year, a rise of 7.8%; and decreased by 480,000 tons compared to the same period two years ago, a drop of 2.9%. By region, steel inventories in Northeast China increased by 240,000 tons, North China by 290,000 tons, East China by 270,000 tons, Northwest China by 80,000 tons, Southwest China by 90,000 tons, and Central-South China by 230,000 tons.
