タングステンは電球のフィラメント材料として使われているのはよく知られています。エジソンが、電球を発明しましたがフィラメントは日本の竹を原料にした炭素でしたが、1906年にタングステンのフィラメントが見(jiàn)いだされて以來(lái)、改良はされていますがいまだ使われ続けています。
電球のフィラメントの用途のようにタングステンは、熱に非常に強(qiáng)い金屬です。タングステンは、人類(lèi)が電気を使って光を得るのに重要な役割を果たしてきました。
その他のものにもタングステンの重さや、不純物を混ぜた時(shí)の固さを利用した使用用途が増えています。
タングステン発見(jiàn)の歴史
タングステンは1781年スウェーデンの化學(xué)者シェーレがタングステンの酸化物を新しい物資として発見(jiàn)しました。タングステンという名前は、スウェーデン語(yǔ)で重い石という意味で、タングステンを分離したその鉱石のこと呼んでいたことから名付けられました。
タングステンが単體の金屬として得られたのは、少し後の1783年になります。スペインのデルイヤール兄弟が、鉄マンガンの鉱石から抽出しました。
タングステンの元素記號(hào)Wは次のような経緯からきています。タングステンの鉱石がスズの鉱石と一緒に見(jiàn)つかることが多くスズを分離することを困難にしました。そのためにウォルファート（Wolfart）：スズを狼のように食べるの意 と呼ばれていました。そして、ここから抽出した金屬のタングステンのことをウォルフラム（Wolfram）と呼んでいました。元素記號(hào)は、この頭文字のWをとったものです。
名前は第一発見(jiàn)者から、元素記號(hào)は最初に金屬を抽出したものからと二重になっています。
